There are certain steps you have to follow if you want to see your site on the first page of Google, and one of these initial steps is to find the best phrases or keywords relevant to your site. Choosing keywords for web page traffic is a very important initial step that a lot of people fail to follow.
Many people make the mistake of thinking that it is fine to rate for just one specific keyword related to their website, and that this will be enough to bring in lots of potential buyers. Using just one keyword may be bring in traffic to their site, it does not mean that the visitors will become buyers. In actual fact it is best to work on targeting for various keywords or phrases on your site if you want to bring in targeted traffic that converts to purchases.
The first and very important step is to recognise or work out who your target audience is and you need to work out what your site is going to provide. Are you going to offer some form of service, or are you more in to selling products, or is your site going to be content based. By knowing your target audience you will be in a position to work out what search phrases they will use to find sites that will provide the service, help or guidance they are hungry to get their hands on.
You will want to consider all the phrases and terms they will possibly use to carry out searches online using search engines such as Google. The trick is to put yourself in their shoes, try and think what they would type into Google. Many newcomers to internet marketing build their sites around one or two keywords and hope to bring in huge amounts of visitors or traffic. Once you start making a list of keywords that others may search for to find what your site will offer you will be surprised at what potential visitors will type in to find your site.
When you have your list of phrases you can start to find out what are the most popular and most competitive phrases in your list of keywords. You can use free online tools to do this such as Google AdWords Keyword tool. This will show you what terms have been searched for, and how many searches are done using that word on a monthly basis. When you enter a phrase into the keyword tool it will create a list of similar search phrases, and will give the figure for how many times each phrase was searched for.
Any keyword tool will not give you an exact figure but it will give you a rough estimation which is close enough for your purposes. Once you have your list search phrases you need to research which are the most competitive. Do not make the mistake that by finding a phrase that has hundreds of thousands of searches every month will be great to use for your site, because it may well not be. Phrases or keywords that get huge searches every month are going to be very competitive. If you use one of these search phrases you had better have a huge budget for paid advertising to make it work for your site.
The best option is that you want to find a keyword phrase that receives over 1,000 searches per month. Then you need to enter that phrase into a Google search but enclose it in exclamation marks so if your keyword was make money online you would enter it into a Google search as “make money online” and click search. This will bring back a list of all the competitive web pages for your keyword phrase. Directly underneath the search phrase it will give you a results figure. This figure is the number of web pages that you are up against for this search phrase. Ideally you need to e looking for a keyword phrase that has less than 30,000 results.
Warning
Do not be fooled if your research gives you a keyword result of less than 100 competing sites that this is a very good keyword to use. If you get under 100 – 150 results you need to do further research to make sure that this actual keyword phrase will earn you money.
To recap then you need to find a keyword that is getting more than 1000 searches per month and it ideally needs to have less than 30,000 competing webpages.
The next step is to repeat the process until you have at least 3 – 5 keyword phrases. When you add new pages to your site you then need to carry out the same process again and find the same number of keyword relevant to that specific page. By targeting different keywords for individual pages of your site it is possible to have different pages ranking on the front page of Google for their specific keywords. So instead of just ranking for one keyword phrase you can end up with ranking on the front page for a number of keyword phrases.
